Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is deep into his offseason efforts, striving to build another competitive team that can keep the franchise’s momentum rolling.

Even after back-to-back impressive seasons that shattered several team records, the Lions are still chasing their ultimate goal — a Super Bowl appearance. That ambition is fueling Campbell and his coaching staff as they work to push the team even further in 2025.

A major piece of that puzzle is quarterback Jared Goff. During the NFL owners meetings on April 1, Campbell made it clear that Goff is not just along for the ride — he’s going to be a driving force.

Goff Remains Central to Detroit’s Offensive Game Plan

Earlier in the year, new offensive coordinator John Morton spoke with Dan Miller of Fox2 and emphasized that Goff will be the cornerstone of Detroit’s offense.

“A lot depends on the quarterback,” Morton said. “I’ve worked with Jared before, and I’ve got a sense of what suits him and what doesn’t. That’s key when calling plays. As we get further into the offseason and players return, I’ll learn more about his preferences and what’s been clicking for this team.”

At the league meetings, Campbell echoed that sentiment and suggested that Goff’s role would grow even more in the coming season.

“He’s continued to take steps forward every year,” Campbell said. “Last season, he delivered exactly what we asked. Then he started offering input — suggesting plays, reading defenses, and identifying opportunities. That’s a sign of a quarterback who’s not just following the playbook but helping shape it. And I expect more of that this year.”

Lions Encouraging Goff to Take the Reins

In a piece covering Campbell’s recent comments, Brad Berreman of SideLion Report explained that the Lions want Goff to assert even more command over the offense.

Berreman highlighted how Goff flourished under former coordinator Ben Johnson, who involved him directly in offensive planning and focused on his strengths. Morton, who replaces Johnson, has no intention of starting from scratch.

“They’ve built a system here already,” Morton said in his Fox2 interview. “My job is to maintain and enhance what Dan envisions. We’ll make small adjustments where needed, but the foundation stays intact.”
