Lions Host Visit With Highly-Rated WR Prospect Amid Draft Buzz
The Detroit Lions appear to be taking head coach Dan Campbell’s recent comments to heart when it comes to reshaping their wide receiver corps.
Speaking at the NFL owners meetings, Campbell emphasized the need to add youth to the receiving group this offseason. Although the Lions already feature a relatively young set of pass-catchers, they still opted to host a pre-draft visit with one of the top receivers in this year’s class.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden was in town over the weekend for a Top-30 visit with Detroit.
This move raises eyebrows, as Golden would likely only be in play with the 28th overall pick — a surprising direction considering Detroit still has a decision to make on Jameson Williams’ fifth-year option. Golden shares a similar skill set to Williams, primarily known for his speed and ability to stretch the field, but lacks the college production Williams boasted prior to entering the NFL.
Golden’s most productive college campaign came in 2024, where he tallied 987 receiving yards over 16 games — decent numbers, but not eye-popping for a potential first-round selection.
Unless the Lions are planning to move on from Williams in the near future, Golden’s role would be limited, making it harder to justify using a first-rounder on him. It could also complicate future roster decisions, especially if Williams earns an extension.
While targeting receivers to bolster the depth chart aligns with Campbell’s vision, Golden may not be the best fit — particularly not with a premium pick in the opening round.
