Phillies Bring Back David Robertson on One-Year Deal for Third Tenure

The Philadelphia Phillies are reuniting with a familiar face, as they have agreed to terms with veteran reliever David Robertson on a one-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $5 million, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and several other sources.

Robertson, who recently threw a bullpen session to showcase his readiness, will turn 40 during the 2025 season. Once the signing is finalized, he’ll be added to the 26-man roster, though the Phillies will need to make a corresponding roster move to accommodate him. While the 40-man roster has an open slot, adjustments will still be required on the active roster.

Veteran Arm Returns After Solid 2024 Campaign

In 2024, Robertson appeared in 68 games for the Texas Rangers, putting together a 3-4 record with a 3.00 ERA and two saves. He posted a 3.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a 1.111 WHIP, and a 2.65 FIP while allowing just 0.63 home runs per nine innings.

Across his lengthy MLB career, Robertson has compiled a 66-46 record, 2.91 ERA, and 177 saves in 861 appearances. He also owns a career 3.23 K/BB ratio, a 1.156 WHIP, a 2.94 FIP, and has surrendered just 0.79 home runs per nine innings on average. Although he brings a wealth of high-leverage experience, the veteran will need to get back into game shape quickly, as he has not pitched in competitive action yet this season.

Phillies Eye More Bullpen Help Before Trade Deadline

Robertson’s signing marks his third stint with Philadelphia. He previously logged a 3.30 ERA in 29 regular-season appearances for the Phillies and was a key contributor during their 2022 postseason run, allowing just one earned run over eight outings. In total, the right-hander has a 3.04 ERA in 42 playoff games, including one save.

While Robertson adds depth to a bullpen that has needed reinforcement, the Phillies are expected to stay active ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski may need to pursue additional bullpen upgrades to keep the team competitive as the playoff race intensified
