The Detroit Lions have a lot of work to do this offseason to get back to the playoffs, and the offensive line will be at the top of the list. Although Taylor Decker is expected to be back, the center position could use improvement.
Even if Graham Glasgow still has one year remaining on his contract, Detroit might have just come across his successor. According to an Ian Rapoport tweet from the NFL Network on Thursday, Tyler Biadasz, the center for the Washington Commanders, is being released.
It’s obvious why the Lions should be keeping an eye on Biadasz as free agency approaches in less than two weeks.
Tyler Biadasz May Be the Perfect Substitute for Graham Glasgow in the Lions’ Lineup
Following Frank Ragnow’s retirement, the Lions shifted Glasgow to center in 2025. Even if he was dressed up beforehand, he didn’t have a great season last year. Glasgow received an overall grade of 56. 8 from Pro Football Focus (33rd out of 40 graded centers), a run-blocking grade of 54. 3 (36th out of 40 graded centers), and a pass-blocking grade of 61. 3 (26th out of 40 graded centers). There were eight quarterback hits and nineteen total pressures allowed by him.
Biadasz, on the other hand, played fairly well for the Commanders last year. He received a 70. 7 overall grade (11th out of 40 rated centers), a 71. 2 run-blocking grade (12th out of 40 rated centers), and a 67. 1 pass-blocking grade (18th out of 40 rated centers) on PFF. Furthermore, he surrendered 21 pressures while allowing no quarterback hits.
Biadasz, who is five years younger than Glasgow, has demonstrated his potential as a top-notch run blocker. Detroit will find it enticing that he has consistently earned a run blocking grade of 68. 0 or more on PFF throughout the previous three seasons. This is particularly evident now that offensive coordinator Drew Petzing is in the mix, given that Arizona’s running game ended seventh or higher in two of the three seasons he was in charge.
The Lions must concentrate on establishing an offensive line that will both protect quarterback Jared Goff and open up gaps in the ground game. At the start of the week, Biadasz wasn’t an option, but it could help Detroit accomplish both of those goals.
Given that free agency is only two weeks away, the Lions would be well advised to develop a strategy to go after the Wisconsin native. A player’s release does not imply that he will perform well. Many judgments are financial, and this was one of them. The Lions now have the opportunity to improve at center, and they should make the most of it.
