Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke glowingly about his team’s performance after their 27–24 victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field, calling it a “total team win.” The triumph ended a two-game losing streak and showcased the balance and grit O’Connell has been emphasizing throughout the season.

Acknowledging how challenging it is to win in Detroit, O’Connell credited his players for refusing to fold when things got tough. “It’s not an easy place to come in and win,” he said. “It would’ve been simple to give in when adversity hit, but our group doesn’t do that. They earned this one through pure effort and togetherness.”

The head coach revealed that the Vikings’ captains played a key role in setting the tone before the game. “Each of our eight captains stood up and delivered their own message to the team during the week,” O’Connell shared. “Some spoke with emotion, others with intensity—but all of them reminded us what we’ve built here. The mindset in that locker room was incredible.”

That unified energy translated onto the field. Minnesota’s defense dominated up front, holding Detroit’s run game to just 65 yards and forcing several third-and-long situations. The defensive line, led by standouts like Blake Cashman and Eric Wilson, consistently pressured Jared Goff and disrupted his rhythm. “Our edge guys and interior linemen really controlled the trenches,” O’Connell noted. “That allowed our linebackers to fly around and make plays. Moving Goff off his spot was key.”

O’Connell also praised rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who accounted for three touchdowns—two through the air and one on the ground. His poise and accuracy in key moments, including a clutch third-down completion to Jalen Nailor that helped seal the win, impressed his coach. “He showed what he’s capable of,” O’Connell said. “His composure in that type of environment really stood out.”

With the victory, Minnesota climbed back to 4–4 on the season, positioning themselves firmly in the NFC North race. “It took stamina and focus from the first snap to the last,” O’Connell concluded. “We had to compete every play to beat a good football team—and that’s exactly what we did.”
