The Minnesota Vikings humbled the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Sunday, spoiling Detroit’s return from their bye week. After the win, rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy took a playful jab at the Lions and their head coach Dan Campbell.
On Monday, November 3, McCarthy shared a series of game photos on his Instagram, accompanied by a cheeky four-word caption:
“Knee caps are intact.”
The post was a humorous reference to Campbell’s fiery introductory press conference back in January 2021, when he famously promised that the Lions would “bite kneecaps off” as part of their gritty, never-quit identity.
In that speech, Campbell described how Detroit’s football team would embody the resilience of the city — tough, relentless, and impossible to break. He said opponents could knock the team down, but the Lions would always get up fighting, taking “a chunk out of” their foes every time they rose.
JJ McCarthy Leads Vikings to Key Win in Michigan Return
McCarthy had every reason to feel confident after the victory. Playing once again in Michigan, where he previously guided the Wolverines to a national championship, the 22-year-old showed poise and control in a crucial divisional matchup.
Returning from a high-ankle sprain that sidelined him for six weeks, McCarthy faced doubts about his readiness at the NFL level. But on Sunday, he silenced critics by completing 14 of 25 passes for 143 yards, tossing two touchdowns and one interception, while also running in a score himself.
His biggest moment came late in the game when he connected with Jalen Nailor on a pivotal third-down pass that helped Minnesota secure a tight three-point win.
McCarthy on the Vikings’ Renewed Energy
Speaking with FOX Sports’ Tom Rinaldi after the game, McCarthy praised his teammates for their fight and focus.
“There was just a new level of energy this week,” McCarthy said. “I’m proud of the guys — we battled and played with a different intensity. But there’s still plenty for us to improve.”
He added that while the Vikings have shown flashes of their potential, they still have “a long way to go” as they brace for one of the toughest remaining schedules in the league.
McCarthy’s confident message — both on and off the field — shows that Minnesota’s young quarterback is embracing his leadership role and isn’t afraid to have a little fun at his opponents’ expense.
