Was Justice Served? 2024 Case Against Former Lions Player Abruptly Dismissed

NFL cornerback Cameron Sutton, who had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions, has officially resolved his legal issues tied to a domestic violence case from earlier in 2024. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Sutton’s agent confirmed that all charges related to the Florida-based incident have been dismissed.

The situation traces back to March 7, when Sutton, then still under contract with Detroit, was accused of assaulting his former girlfriend in an altercation near Tampa. The allegations included physical assault and choking, with reports stating that Sutton slammed the woman into a wall, bit her neck, and strangled her to the point of unconsciousness.

Sutton reportedly fled before law enforcement arrived and remained unreachable for several days. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued by authorities in Hillsborough County. At the time the story became public, Sutton was present at the Lions’ facility in Allen Park, Michigan.

“He just showed up unannounced to get in a workout,” team president Rod Wood told Fox 2 last March. “He was with our strength coaches when we located him. While I didn’t speak to him personally, other staff members did. He left afterward, and the next day we terminated his contract. No contact has been made since.”

Following his release, Sutton reunited with his previous team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, signing a one-year deal. However, his return was marred by an eight-game suspension stemming from the same incident. During the remainder of the season, Sutton contributed modestly, appearing in nine games and logging 15 tackles along with three pass breakups. Despite the brief reunion, Pittsburgh chose not to offer him a contract extension.

Now that the legal case has been cleared, Sutton appears ready to turn the page, although his future in the NFL remains uncertain.
