The Detroit Lions made a significant roster move on Sunday, releasing veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith ahead of the start of NFL free agency, which begins on Monday at noon ET. The decision, first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, marks the end of Smith’s brief tenure in Detroit after the team acquired him via trade during the 2024 season.

Smith joined the Lions at the NFL trade deadline after Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury. The three-time Pro Bowler played a key role in revitalizing the Lions’ pass rush in the second half of the season. In eight games, he registered four sacks, providing valuable production for Detroit’s defense.
