Jamie Carragher says Liverpool simply had no choice but to spend huge money to sign Moises Caicedo.

The Reds have agreed a record £110m fee with Brighton for the Ecuadorian, who is set to undergo a medical today.

And having been vocal about Liverpool’s need to bring in a player like Caicedo, Carragher took to Twitter to express his delight this morning.

“110 million is a hefty price tag for Caicedo but Liverpool paid dearly because the clubs know they are desperate,” he said.

“But signing two top young players for 145 million and selling your two older players for 52 million is a great deal!”

Carragher got what he asked for
Always good to hear Carragher on Liverpool questions. It is clear that Scouser is pleased with the business his former club is doing.

Earlier this week, Carragher checked Caicedo’s name as a player Liverpool should be targeting.

Gary Neville also has a similar view when he thinks that the Red Devils FSG owners need to support Jurgen Klopp by spending money to buy Caicedo.

Behold, just a few days later, Liverpool are about to close a big and unlikely deal.

As Carra pointed out – like many people – that’s a huge amount to pay. But given the form they have shown, Liverpool have no choice but to leave this summer.

The unexpected sale of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho certainly helped facilitate this in many ways. While ostensibly offering a cash boost, their departure also opens the door to team entry for the likes of Caicedo. Pressure will now be on the young Ecuadorian to keep his price up. But Liverpool’s fan base will give him the time he needs to do it. For now, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the final stages of the deal
