Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed the club have reached an agreement with Brighton for Moises Caicedo.
talkSPORT understands the Reds are set to pay a British record fee of £111million for the midfielder this summer.
Such a deal would make Caicedo the third most expensive player in world football history.
Chelsea have been favorites for his signature for weeks but Liverpool appear to be closing in on a deal.
Speaking during his first press conference of the season ahead of their clash, Klopp revealed:
“First and foremost, I have been informed that I can confirm the agreement with the club has been made, whatever that means, and then the player agreement that we will see.
“We are a club without endless resources, and some things we didn’t expect in the summer, Hendo [Jordan Henderson], Fab [Fabinho], we didn’t think of those things [sold]. them] before summer to be honest.
“Then it happened and we tried and the club was really tense, to be honest. I can’t and don’t want to share more than that. Let’s see what happens and then we start from there.
Caicedo will probably have a medical today but when asked about that, Klopp replied:
“I can’t say, I don’t know. It’s the truth.”
Liverpool will soon be spending the summer on more than £200m after completing their latest signing.
However, Klopp remained silent when asked if the club would return to the transfer market before the transfer window closed.
“Let’s take it one step at a time. We’ll see what happens in the next few hours or days and start from there.
Amid the reported fee for Caicedo, his previous comments about spending more than £100m on a player have resurfaced.
“In my football days, I wouldn’t have a job,” Klopp said six years ago.
But now he has admitted that he was wrong with the current market.
Klopp said on Friday:
“Things have changed. Do I like it? ARE NOT. Do I realize I was wrong? Correct. That’s the way it goes.
“Saudi Arabia is not going to help with that. Ultimately, we have to try to make sure that we put together the best team we can. 50% will like and 50% will not.
“We try to assemble the best team for us. You can’t just nominate players and bring them in, there’s a lot of work to be done. Sometimes one door closes and another opens.
“If people want to throw away my quotes from five years ago, that’s fine. I realized that I was wrong.
