Brighton accepted Liverpool’s club-record $110 million offer for Moises Caicedo after Southampton turned down three other offers for Romeo Lavia.

How is it possible for Liverpool to spend £110 million on Moises Caicedo while they are having trouble meeting Romeo Lavia’s asking price?

That is the query that has perplexed many ever since news of the Reds’ intention to make a bid for the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder first surfaced. This was only days after Southampton rejected Southampton’s third offer for the Belgian.

If Liverpool has a club record £110 million to spend on Caicedo, they obviously have the funds available. And if they had given it up for Lavia in the first place, the Premier League wouldn’t have had to endure one of the strangest transfer-window weeks ever, with two nail-biting sagas still unresolved. But it’s not quite that easy.

To repeat, the Reds make three offers for Lavia, each of which is below the Saints’ £50 million asking price. After making an initial offer of £34 million and £4 million in add-ons, they then made an offer of £42 million, and on Monday, a third offer of £46 million was turned down.
