Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has identified two areas where Jurgen Klopp’s men need to improve in the transfer market following the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a new midfielder and defender after their Premier League opener against Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp’s side drew 1-1 with the Blues at Stamford Bridge, as Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead before Chelsea debutant Axel Disasi scored the equalizer. And former Reds star Carragher has expressed concern over Liverpool’s defensive performance, saying Chelsea are the “better team”.

“Chelsea is in the process of being perfected,” the former defender told Sky Sports. “New coach, new player. I think they were the better team today, no doubt about that. My big concern with Liverpool is defence.

“The last act sums it up because they had a corner and they almost conceded a goal at the other end. Liverpool need a holding midfielder. They need a real defender, an all-round defender. can play through this four-man defense.”

And Klopp has stressed the need to sign a new midfielder following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. “It comes as no surprise that we are looking for this position,” he said.

“It’s obvious and it would be great if we could do something, but right now we can do a lot. We can also play double Six or Double Pivot and Stefan [Bajcetic] will be back. again.

“He played really well in that position, so we have options, we have Curtis [Jones], we can tweak the system and have picks. But yes, it would be great if we could [sign a starting midfielder].”

Against Chelsea, new signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai line up alongside Cody Gakpo in midfield three, with Liverpool now on the brink of missing out on a record transfer for Brighton star Moises Caicedo .

Chelsea have beaten Liverpool to the signing of Caicedo and are also hoping to usurp the Reds’ move for Southampton star Romeo Lavia. It’s no surprise that Carragher is keen to see Liverpool sign a versatile defender this summer.
