Liverpool has entered the competition to recruit Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen.

According to reports, the Reds have spent the entire summer looking for a defensive upgrade. Many names have been suggested, with a left-sided center-back reportedly being preferred.

However, none of them have received definite action to date. However, according to the German publication Fussball Transfers, that may soon change.

They assert that Liverpool is currently “involved” in the fight to get Hincapie out of Leverkusen. The Ecuadorian has ‘admirers’ at Anfield, so the Reds are now very interested in him.

West Ham, who are alleged to have already spoken to Leverkusen about the prospect of a transfer, will reportedly compete with them.

It is also asserted that other, unnamed Premier League teams have expressed interest in Hincapie. The 21-year-old’s potential signing by RB Leipzig has been put on hold as they now have Castello Lukeba from Lyon.

Hincapie hasn’t played in Leverkusen’s preseason because a metatarsal injury will keep him out until September. This, though, doesn’t seem likely to prevent a transfer. The Ecuadorian international’s departure is rumored to be a possibility in the closing weeks of the transfer season.

‘Hard as nails’ according to Fussball Transfers, the Leverkusen defender is a defender with enormous potential, and most importantly from Liverpool’s point of view, the Leverkusen man is a left-footer. That seems to be important to them as they search for a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool is interested in Hincapie.

Hincapie really holds up extremely well when compared to Van Dijk. According to squawka.com’s ‘Comparison Matrix,’ the former Independiente del Valle player actually made more successful tackles than the Reds skipper last season.

Obviously, Liverpool will be considering a lot more than just that. But even so, it’s stunning.

However, the Reds may be concerned due to something that, regrettably, is known about Hincapie’s agency. The same persons that represent Moises Caicedo are handling the young person.

With Liverpool having been apparently burnt so severely by Caicedo’s representatives recently, perhaps they’ll think twice about doing business with them again. That would be a real shame, given Hincapie would appear to tick plenty of boxes.
