There are mixed expectations after Liverpool launch an official appeal to withdraw Alexis Mac Allister’s red card

Liverpool fans are so far in disagreement as to whether Alexis Mac Allister’s red card will be reversed in time for Sunday’s visit to Newcastle.

The Argentinian was sent off in the 57th minute of his home debut for a challenge on Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie. It was given as an instantaneous red card without VAR intervention and the club have now announced that they have taken the necessary steps to attempt to reverse the card through an appeal.

Afterwards, countless observers gave their verdict.

Gary Lineker disapproved of the decision, as did fellow Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer. Former Premier League referee Mike Dean was one of the few voices to defend Thomas Bramall’s decision on the pitch, but another former referee, Dermot Gallagher, took a strong stance against the decision.

But the outcry came too late to be heard by Bramall or his VAR officers for Saturday’s game, Paul Tierney and Constantine Hatzidakis, who flagged a criticism as unwarranted.

The appeal was lodged with the Football Association for “wrongful dismissal”

. They will now review the evidence with the help of an independent regulatory commission and present their findings later this week.

Currently, Mac Allister is likely to miss the visit to St James Park as well as the home games against Aston Villa and Wolves. ECHO’s Ian Doyle reported the news of an appeal on social media this afternoon, with supporters subsequently questioning whether the FA will release the Reds’ No10 from his conviction.

Many worried that an appeal would not be upheld, despite a strong belief that the initial decision was wrong

The outcome of the appeal will be heard before the weekend, but for now Jurgen Klopp will have to assume he will be without his £35m summer contract. The boss of the Reds is also waiting
