The move came after Liverpool signed a deal with Brighton for the first time

Moises Caicedo has rejected a move to Liverpool this summer by texting manager Jurgen Klopp.

Despite being Chelsea’s number one target in midfield, it was Liverpool who were the first to agree a £111m transfer fee to land the Ecuador international from Brighton & Hove Albion. Klopp himself admitted in a press conference that a deal has been brokered.

However, Caicedo had other ideas and ultimately refused a move to Liverpool, only interested in Chelsea, who had yet to agree a transfer fee with Brighton but eventually agreed a deal worth of £115 million.

According to The Athletic, this refusal actually came via text message to manager Klopp, who had texted the midfielder to convince him to make the move.

Klopp reportedly sent a series of messages to Caicedo convincing the 21-year-old of his desire to work together, but Caicedo’s response made it clear he didn’t want to join Liverpool. However, the damage caused by Caicedo’s phone does not end there. The £115m man then texted Romeo Lavia, urging the Belgian to reject overtures from Liverpool and follow him to Chelsea.

Caicedo’s charm offensive succeeded as Lavia turned down the opportunity to continue negotiations with Liverpool in favor of a £58million move to Stamford Bridge.

The sacking of the Liverpool duo forced Klopp to continue his search for midfield reinforcements elsewhere and the surprise signing of Japan international Wataru Endo from Stuttgart was finalized soon after.
