Cody Gakpo thought he had scored his first goal of the season in the 56th minute when he sent the ball past Nick Pope at the near post, but the striker’s clearance was ruled a cross and the goal disallowed.
After a quiet first half, Liverpool increased the pressure again after the restart and took a deserved lead in the 71st minute.
Salah did well to beat his man to the right and dive at goal before firing an early cross into the middle. The ball hung in the air, prompting Pope to come off his line, but the keeper misjudged and DÃaz met the Englishman and bravely slotted the ball into an empty net. Gakpo came close twice in the next ten minutes and were sent home one on one,
but a great save and a wonderful final challenge kept it 1-0. Newcastle were rarely threatened in the last 30 minutes of the game, but a defensive error allowed the Magpies to equalize in the 89th minute.
Andy Robertson headed home the Newcastle man’s cross on the edge of the box, allowing the home side to attack the Liverpool defence. Alexander Isak was passed into the goal and his cross was answered in the penalty area by Joelinto, who ran past Alisson behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and made the score 1:1.
