Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made one of the best saves he’s ever seen during Sunday’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

Due to Darwin Nunez’s late heroics, the save performed by the Brazilian goalie in the 36th minute of the game almost went unnoticed. The Reds, who were down to 10 men midway through the first half after Virgil van Dijk was given a straight red card by referee John Brooks, completed an incredible comeback with two goals from substitute Nunez.

Without Alisson’s remarkable reflexes, Liverpool would have most likely trailed 2-0 at the half. After Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool made a mistake in the right back position in the 25th minute, Anthony Gordon calmly scored to put Newcastle in the lead. At this point, the home team was clearly in control.

Miguel Almiron of Newcastle undoubtedly believed he had doubled his team’s lead after striking the ball beautifully with his left foot inside the box. However, Alisson miraculously clawed the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety as the Paraguayan international and his teammates stood in astonishment. Check out the incredible save below:

Even though August has not yet ended, that is already a front-runner for Premier League save of the year. It’s reasonable to believe that between now and May, few goalkeepers will make better saves than they have before.

Howe even remarked on Alisson’s save for Almiron’s shot after the game, according to writer @DaveOCKOP on Twitter: “Alisson’s save, for Almiron’s shot, was the best I’ve ever seen in my life.” Very high praise indeed, but you have to admit, it is fully merited.

How many saves did Alisson make vs Newcastle?

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2018, Alisson has never made more than seven saves in a single Premier League game. He made a total of seven saves during the encounter. “I am here,” the South American said to Sky Sports following the game. “This is a task I have.”

Is Alisson the best goalkeeper in the world?

With his most impressive performance to date, Alisson further solidified his position as the top goalkeeper in the Premier League. But is the Brazilian international goalkeeper currently the best in football?

There aren’t many, if any, goalkeepers who are currently better than Liverpool’s No. 1—of course, everything is subjective. Prior to the 2023–24 season, GIVEMESPORT listed the top 15 goalkeepers in the world, and Alisson was ranked second, ahead of players like Jan Oblak, Andre Onana, Mike Maignan, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Alisson was beaten to the top slot by Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid, but that was before the Belgian international tragically suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier this month. The 31-year-old, who has been outstanding for Los Blancos lately, is anticipated to miss the most of the current campaign.
