The England international was a superstar at Leeds United but has been little more than a bench warmer under Pep Guardiola since moving to the Etihad last year.

News – £70m star ready to agree Liverpool move, Reds’ intentions –

City have played five games so far in the current campaign and the £160,000-a-week star has not played a single minute.

In that scenario, Phillips has been backed for a move to Liverpool this summer. Former Hammers striker Frank McAvennie told Football Insider:

Former Anfield goalkeeper David James has praised the Three Lions midfielder and believes he would be a good fit at Anfield.

The 27-year-old made 27 senior appearances and was a key member of Southgate’s side that reached the European Championship final two years ago.

However, things have changed dramatically since he joined the Premier League champions. He needs to start playing every week this summer to make the Euro 2024 squad.

Do you think Liverpool should sign Phillips ahead of schedule?
