Liverpool have options on the table if they were to pursue a late move for a new central defender.
Liverpool always had a center-back shortage, but it has gotten worse recently. The injury to Ibrahima Konate and the suspension of Virgil van Dijk highlight Jurgen Klopp’s lack of depth in the middle of his defense.
In Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 victory at Newcastle, Joel Matip made his first season debut. He replaced Konate, who is probably going to be out until after the international break due to a muscle issue.
Then, in the 28th minute, Van Dijk was dismissed for blocking a clear chance for Alexander Isak to score. Although he didn’t agree with the choice, he will miss the upcoming weekend’s game against Aston Villa at home.

Liverpool has been looking into possible left-footed center-back signings. Inacio meets the criteria and has been connected to a transfer to Anfield.
The 22-year-old senior Portugal international has played in over 120 matches for Sporting Lisbon. He has recently signed a contract extension, increasing his release clause from £38.6 million to £51.5 million.
Liverpool, meanwhile, has favored signing players this summer who have release clauses. Both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai arrived following the activation of their buyouts.
After spending a few years with the Ajax first squad, Schuurs only made the switch to Serie A last summer. While not left-footed, the 23-year-old fits the age range that Klopp is looking for.
Since Schuurs is a fellow Dutchman, he may team up with Van Dijk. His chances of winning senior honors for the Netherlands would improve if he did this after failing to play during his lone call-up to date in September 2020.
Several teams are interested in Crystal Palace player Guehi, with Liverpool being one of them. The Mail reported in May that the defender is also being watched by Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham.
Since moving to Palace from Chelsea in the summer of 2021, Guehi has flourished. He hasn’t yet agreed to a five-year contract extension, though.
Despite having a right foot, Guehi can play as a left-sided center back with ease. He would provide Premier League experience, having participated in the league 76 times for Palace.
