Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the final days of the transfer window.

Whether Liverpool will be able to add another player this summer will worry manager Jurgen Klopp.

The transfer deadline is coming up, but Liverpool’s business doesn’t seem to be moving forward.

For some time, Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich has been mentioned as a potential choice.

To sign the Dutch international, they must contend with Manchester United, and they won’t want to enter another bidding battle.

Since signing from Leeds in the summer of last year, the ‘outstanding’ England international hasn’t seen much action for Pep Guardiola’s team.

Shearer supports Phillips joining Liverpool if Man City is successful in acquiring Matheus Nunes.

In an effort to speed up a transfer, the Portuguese player at Wolves has ceased practicing.

lvin Phillips is another player the Reds have been examining this summer.

Shearer backs Phillips to join Liverpool

Do you believe that Kalvin Phillips will move elsewhere, perhaps to Liverpool, because Man City is attempting to get [Matheus] Nunes from Wolves? Shearer said in reference to the 27-year-old’s future.

“He needs to play some football, doesn’t he?” said Gary Lineker.

When Shearer was questioned about possible signings, he responded, “Only I mentioned that Micah [Richards], because you mentioned signings, I think that’s one that could happen if City get him from Wolves then that would free up Kalvin Phillips to go somewhere.”

Shearer is correct that Nunes may be necessary for Phillips to go into Liverpool.

Although it has always been how Guardiola has crafted his sides, Man City now don’t have the largest squad.

He can also draw on a large pool of gifted children who attend the institution.

Wataru Endo, a recent addition, and Stefan Bajcetic, a talented midfielder, require competition, hence Liverpool needs a defensively minded player.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister would be the ideal partners for Phillips, who can also play higher up the field if necessary.

If Liverpool is counting on Nunes going to the Etihad, they may have to wait until the very last minute to send in Phillips.
