Ryan Gravenberch has been linked to moves to both Liverpool and Manchester United over the summer, but the Reds may potentially be in a stronger position as United looks elsewhere.

Following Manchester United’s move to acquire Sofyan Amrabat, Liverpool has begun formal negotiations with Bayern Munich about a trade for Ryan Gravenberch.

Prior to Friday’s transfer deadline, the Reds and United were interested in signing Gravenberch, a 21-year-old midfielder who started just three Bundesliga games the previous season.

Prior to the transfer window closing, it is anticipated that both and United would add midfield reinforcements. With United now aggressively pursuing a move for Amrabat, Liverpool now has more room to try to reach an agreement with Bayern Munich.

The Athletic reports that Gravenberch’s permanent transfer talks between the Reds and Bayern have begun, with both teams reportedly discussing how much they value the midfielder. Initially, the Reds simply intended to pursue a loan agreement for the Dutch star.

A loan offer for Amrabat from Manchester United was turned down by Fiorentina just hours before Liverpool made their move. Gravenberch is a player who, like Amrabat, has frequently been mentioned in connection with a transfer to the Premier League during the previous six months.

Before the deadline, Bayern Munich is apparently preparing a bid for Fulham’s defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha; this would cause Gravenberch to drop even further down the Munich hierarchy.

Although Gravenberch had earlier this week acknowledged that he “doesn’t know” if he will be offered the choice to leave Bayern before Friday, it is already evident that he will not put up with another season of playing on the sidelines.
