Leeds United have been interested in a late move for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley and a new update suggests the Whites have no hope of signing the player before tonight’s deadline.

Who could Leeds sign today? 49ers Enterprises have ramped up their transfer activity over the past seven days, with the arrival of four players to bring the club’s total to eight new signings.

Joel Piroe, Djed Spence, Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara have joined Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram, Karl Darlow and Joe Rodon at Elland Road and there could still be a place.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds are making backup plans in attack and have begun talks with AS Roma over a possible move for winger Ola Solbakken.

If Wilfried Gnonto or Luis Sinisterra leave Yorkshire, a deal could be on the cards for the Norwegian, and while two new midfielders were brought in yesterday in Gruev and Kamara, a move for O’Riley still looks interesting.

Reports in recent days have claimed that Leeds are interested in signing the Celtic man and another update has emerged. According to Sky Sports, Leeds made a £10m offer for O’Riley and the Hoops rejected the offer.

“Celtic rejected a £10m bid from Leeds for Matt O’Riley, which is important for the Championship because money is being thrown around. “The Scottish champions have reiterated to Leeds that they do not consider the player for sale.”

Who is Matt O’Riley? The 22-year-old O’Riley is primarily a central midfielder who can also play as a holding or advanced midfielder when required.

The London-born midfielder actually represented Denmark at U21 level and started his career at Fulham, but only made five appearances before being released.

He then signed for MK Dons and made 54 appearances and scored 18 goals. Former MK Dons manager Russell Martin, now in charge of Southampton, previously told the Scottish Sun that O’Riley was a player who “can do almost anything”.

“Physically he is amazing, he was a heavy machine, scored some goals, got assists and could play deeper or higher. – He played higher for us most of the time because that was his preference. He went deeper this season but still scored goals.

He can do almost anything. He has good eyesight, is a good athlete and a very smart kid.
“He is one of the most intelligent footballers I have ever worked with.”

Sponsored by Nike and valued at €9m by Transfermarkt, O’Riley has been on the books in Glasgow for over 18 months and made 76 appearances, helping the Hoops to a domestic treble last season.

He seems to have caught the eye in Yorkshire and from the looks of things could be one to watch for a move and it will be interesting to see if Leeds come back with an improved offer soon.
