Joe Gomez wants Liverpool to build on the momentum built in the opening stages of the Premier League season when they return from football’s break.

The Reds picked up their third straight Premier League win at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, beating Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 3-0 to remain unbeaten this season.

Gomez started the match at the heart of Liverpool’s defense alongside Joel Matip, helping to secure his first clean sheet of the season.

At the other end, Dominik Szoboszlai’s first goal for the club, Matty Cash’s own goal and Mohamed Salah’s second-half strike secured the three points.

Liverpool’s strong start to the campaign has seen them take 10 points from a possible 12, giving them a firm basis for further work when they return to action at Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 16.

“It’s a different team and I think, as always, it’s important that we don’t get ahead of ourselves,” Gomez told Liverpoolfc.com after the match.

Obviously, all the guys are touring the world right now and we have to go right back and regroup and try to keep the momentum going. [We’ll] keep pushing and see how we can move forward.”

He added: “A lot has changed with the staff this year but the lads who have come in are amazing and have shown what they can do.

“It’s also a breath of fresh air to see the kids settling in so quickly and doing what they’re doing and expressing themselves. Like I say, it’s just the beginning, we’ve got to keep getting better.

Yeah, I mean, [in the last two weeks] the guy emphasized that we haven’t had the best of starts. Today we had to focus on controlling the game. I think we did that from the beginning. Obviously Dom scoring a big goal early has a huge impact and it gave us belief. When we got the next couple of [goals], it was about focus and trying to control the game.

I think that’s what the bastard wanted; a mixture of keeping the ball and knowing when to try to threaten from the back. Trent played great balls and showed his ability. I think it’s a building block and obviously it’s still early and we have to build on it.

He is pitching for the 200th time in his career…
Obviously things change and you have to try to be prepared and that’s what I try to be proud of. [I try to apply myself every day to be ready to try to contribute to the team. That’s a nice personal touch, but it’s more important to get the three points.
