Liverpool were already in need of a central defender, but that has only increased in recent days. Virgil van Dijk’s suspension and Ibrahima Konate’s injury only show Jürgen Klopp’s lack of depth in defence.

Joel Matip made his debut of the season in Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win at Newcastle. He replaced Konate, who is likely to be out after the international break with a muscle problem. Van Dijk was sent off in the 28th minute for not giving Alexander Isak a clear scoring chance. He did not like the decision but will miss next weekend’s home game against in-form Aston Villa.

Joe Gomez came off the bench, as did youngster Jarell Quansah, but Klopp’s resources are now maxed out. The Reds have until 11am on Friday to complete transfer matters and Express Sport looks at three defenders they could target up front.

Goncalo Inacio
Liverpool have been exploring options for the left-footed centre-back. Inacio fits the bill and has been linked with a move to Anfield.

The 22-year-old player has already played more than 120 matches for Sporting Lisbon and is a first team member of the Portuguese national team. He only recently signed a contract extension, increasing his release clause from £38.6m to £51.5m.

But Liverpool preferred to buy players with release clauses this summer. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai both arrived after the buy-in began.
