Liverpool splashed the cash on their rebuild in the summer and there’s no reason to believe the shake-up won’t continue in the January transfer window. The Reds have started the Premier League season unbeaten and may need further investment to push for the title.

Jurgen Klopp overhauled his midfield in the summer, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo. As a result, several veteran stars – such as James Milner – were allowed to leave, and Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were also eased.

Liverpool also needed to strengthen their defenders before the end of the transfer window and were able to achieve this goal in the January transfer window. Other additions should not be discarded either, although they could be acquired instead of those promised to leave the club. Thiago Alcantara

Despite interest from the Saudi Arabian outfit and Turkish side, Liverpool decided to retain the services of Thiago.

The Spaniard has not played for the club so far this season due to injury problems and will need to stay fit for the future at Anfield. The former Bayern Munich star is out of contract at the end of the season and the Reds may be tempted to cash in on his services in January if they do not want to sign him to a new deal.

Liverpool were expected to sign a left-back in the summer, and with Matip in the final year of his contract, the writing is on the wall for the 32-year-old. With Joe Gomez signing a long-term deal with the club last year, the England international remains in Klopp’s long-term plans and Matip will therefore need to prove he has something to offer to avoid being sidelined for a minimum fee in January.
