Alexis Mac Allister was one of a number of Liverpool players to struggle in the first half against Wolves, with Jurgen Klopp admitting after the game that the midfielder was “relieved” by the game.

Mac Allister played for Argentina against Bolivia on Tuesday night in a high-profile game facing a quick turnaround before the team travel to Wolves.

The Argentine received an early yellow card and toiled for the first 45 minutes in what was a difficult start to the contest for the Reds.

Klopp admitted the midfielder was “low energy” due to his international commitments and that the 24-year-old was “relieved” rather than disappointed to be dropped.

“The good thing about the first half was that it was so bad, I didn’t think we could play like that in the second half,” joked the manager.

“Low energy, Macca and a few others just saw that they were struggling. We couldn’t make five changes at half-time, so we thought we would change the system and one player and give us a little more speed up front, natural speed. .

“He had some good moments in the first half but he wasn’t disappointed to go out, more relieved.”

Liverpool grew into the game after the break as goals from Cody Gakpo, Andy Robertson and a late dismissal from Harvey Elliott sealed victory.
