Neville may regret Liverpool’s claim as comments from Man United begin to backfire

Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City

Gary Neville’s pre-season comments about Liverpool’s midfield have resurfaced on social media following Manchester United’s poor start to the campaign.

Liverpool lead United in the Premier League season by seven points after five games, 10 apart between the teams. The Red Devils opened with a nervous 1-0 home win against Wolves, although they have lost three of their last four games and fell down the. a table

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side only dropped points at Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season, with wins against Newcastle United, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Wolves.

Much has been made of how Liverpool would adapt to a new-look midfield with key players departing in the summer and four new arrivals, although the Reds have so far risen to the challenge. Before the start of the 2023/24 season, Neville was unconvinced by the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

He boldly claimed that Klopp would like to trade his options for those of Erik ten Hag.

“If we look at the real players, let’s take United for example: Fernandes, Mount, Casemiro, Eriksen. I think Klopp would now switch his midfield to United,” said the former United right-back.

United’s midfield, on the other hand, looked the weaker of the two and this was evident again on Saturday afternoon as Brighton cruised through it with ease en route to a dominant 3-1 win at Old Trafford. Liverpool fans were keen to remind Neville of his comments, which were also enjoyed by Jamie Carragher. Carragher shared the clip on his Twitter page when he took part in the first chat with Neville on Sky Sports’ The Overlap at the start of August.

It’s not the first time Neville has seen a pre-season prediction involving Liverpool cause confusion.

Ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, he famously said: “I can guarantee you as clear as day that Manchester United will win again. I think they will win the league ahead of Liverpool. And that’s no disrespect, they’ll probably win the league ahead of Liverpool.”

Of course, Klopp’s side would win the title this year by 18 points, 33 points ahead of United.
