Asked if he takes inspiration from the game’s perennial greats, Liverpool manager Klopp told TNT Sports: “I never thought I was one of them so I forgot to look at them. It just happened. I only had three clubs so each .club was a different story, a different starting point. Everyone wants to see – CEOs, club presidents – that their team is in good hands, that they can see progress and that it’s moving in the right direction. For some reason I don’t know exactly, I was somehow able to manage and that’s why I was able to work longer in the clubs. It’s easier to see with Pep because he wins everything, so why send him off?”

Klopp, who played for Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before moving to Merseyside, added: “I’ve never compared myself to the real top players who have been at the big clubs for almost 20 years or more. I really think it’s only possible at the big clubs. or you are a clubman. In Germany we have a similar story with Christian Streich [SC Freiburg manager since 2011 and club coach since 1995]. Otherwise, it is only possible in big clubs, which occasionally succeed, because otherwise people want change and that is their right.

Klopp’s contract at Liverpool runs until the summer of 2026, giving him more than a decade at Anfield, but he has been linked with the Germany international job when it becomes available – most recently by former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick. Die Mannschaft was fired.
