Liverpool kick off the 2023-24 Europa League season when they take on Austria’s LASK in Group E on Thursday night (5.45pm BST).

The Reds will compete in Europe’s second-tier club competition for the first time since 2015-16, when they conceded a place in the Champions League. However, Jurgen Klopp insisted he hopes to reach the final and win the only trophy he still has as Anfield boss.

“We want to go as far as possible,” said Klopp. “Of course I would like to go to the final, but I have no idea if you will get there because there are many fantastic football teams between us and that goal. So we have to make sure we deliver.”

Liverpool will go into the match against LASK in good form. They started the campaign by picking up 13 points from their first five Premier League games – the latest of which was a 3-1 win over Wolves.

On the way to LASK, Klopp will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold (thigh) and Thiago Alcantara (hip). The Reds boss could make changes to his squad, especially for Sunday’s clash with West Ham United.
With all this in mind, here is the team we predict with LASK. 1st GK – Caoimhin Kelleher
One reason Kelleher didn’t leave in the summer could be to qualify for the Europa League group stage to get more minutes. He played just four times last season

2nd RB – Joe Gomez
Trent is likely to continue as a substitute in Alexander-Arnold’s absence

3. CB – Virgil van Dijk
Having missed the previous two games, the Liverpool captain has a good chance to regain his form.

4. CM – Joel Matip

So we have to make sure we perform.”

5. LB – Kostas Tsimikas
A solid second behind Andy Robertson, but rarely stands out when given the chance.

6. CM – Wataru Endo
A good opportunity to get minutes from Stuttgart in the summer and continue to adapt to the new system in Liverpool.

7. CM – Ryan Gravenberch
I came off the bench at Wolves and this seems like the perfect opportunity to give Bayern Munich’s £34m signing a full debut.

8. CM – Harvey Elliott

10. ST – Cody Gakpo
Scored the equalizer at Wolves but was below his best so may be looking for confidence.
