BBC Pundit Shay Given says Liverpool have a fantastic player who never stops running

BBC Sport pundit Shay Given has praised Liverpool star Darwin Nunez after his performances this weekend.

The Uruguayan saw a lot of criticism thrown at him last season. It took him time to adjust after moving from Portugal, but now he is looking at home.

Given praised him on BBC Sport.

Shay Given praises Liverpool star Darwin Nunez

Liverpool have had a great start to the season haven’t they? The Reds are second in the Premier League after five wins and a draw in their opening six games and Darwin Nunez has been fantastic for the Reds alongside Mohamed Salah.

The Uruguayan looks like a completely different player compared to last season. Yes, he still has a lot of room for improvement, but no one can question his work ethic.

Given has watched Nunez several times this season and has been impressed with how he doesn’t stop running. This is what he wrote on the BBC about the striker. “When I saw them beat Newcastle with 10 men last month, Liverpool must have been a bit lucky but Darwin Nunez won the game brilliantly for them – and he scored another big goal against the Hammers to put Liverpool 2-1 up,” wrote Given.

“Nunez was very hit and miss last season but I like that he doesn’t let it bother him if he doesn’t give up a big chance. It happened in the second half against West Ham when he saw his shot hit the near post. … but less so when seven minutes later he buried his next chance, which was actually much more difficult.

– That mental toughness is a huge positive for any striker and the more goals he scores, the more relaxed Nunez is in front of goal.

“I can see why Reds fans love him so much because he brings so much to the team even without the ball, his work rate when they press and he doesn’t stop for the whole game.”

Darwin killed Liverpool

Darwin Nunez deserves a lot of credit for the way he has performed for Liverpool this season. The 24-year-old scored four goals and provided two assists in just 311 minutes. That’s a direct goal every 52 minutes, a very impressive return.

Nunez now understands Jurgen Klopp’s system much better than he did last year and seems to be improving every week.

Next up for Liverpool in the Premier League is a tough game against Tottenham. It will be interesting to see if Nunez gets the nod from the start.
