Jamie Carragher assesses Liverpool and Arsenal’s Premier League title chances

Jamie Carragher has shared his views on Liverpool and Arsenal’s Premier League title chances and whether either side can stop Manchester City this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been absolutely dominant in recent years, lifting five of the last six major trophies.

City won the treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season and are now targeting a fourth successive campaign at the top level.

Arsenal and Liverpool are widely seen as the two closest challengers, with the Gunners spending 248 days at the top of the table last season – the most for a non-title team in English Premier League history – before finishing second.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are the only team to deny City in recent years, beating Guardiola’s side to the 2019-20 Premier League title. Arsenal and Liverpool have both enjoyed strong starts to the season and are unbeaten from their opening six meetings, but both clubs are City, who have an excellent record and have won every game in the Premier League so far.

Asked about Liverpool and Arsenal’s chances of stopping City this season, Carragher told Sky Sports: “The [Liverpool] team only have so many goals.

“As for the challenge for Liverpool this season, I think they have started the season [well] and Jurgen Klopp calls it Liverpool 2.0.

– It’s a start again when they fell off a cliff last season. I don’t think Liverpool can challenge Manchester City and win the title at the moment.

– It could come in a few years when Liverpool is rebuilding. I fear the Premier League, I can see Man City winning it by 10 points.

“It’s really worrying because they started so well and usually they don’t. We’re looking at one of the best teams we’ve ever seen after winning the Champions League.

“Kevin De Bruyne is out and they won every match, they didn’t miss him.

“Liverpool and Arsenal are lacking in a few other areas compared to Man City.”
