Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham was mired in controversy after Luis Diaz tampered with a goal pass, and now Sky Sports has produced new evidence of the incident.

Sky Sports revealed that during Liverpool’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, the referees on the pitch only knew when they disallowed Luis Diaz’s goal at half-time, while the VAR operators knew almost immediately.

Communication between referee Simon Hooper and VAR Darren England saw Diaz’s goal disallowed on Saturday, despite the Reds winger being there before hitting the ball past Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. That’s because England got the impression at the VAR center at Stockley Park that the goal was decided on the pitch.

After drawing the 2D line to make sure Diaz was there, he told Hooper “check done” and the game resumed – but still 0-0. England and colleague Dan Cook found that the VAR protocol did not call for a stoppage again after the start of the game, and therefore the on-field officials were only aware of their error at half-time. Liverpool have already contacted PGMOL and requested a recording of the conversation between Hooper and England, but Reds legend Jamie Carragher is still furious about the “terrible mistake”. Carragher stated on Monday Night Football: “I don’t think the feeling about VAR has been worse, it’s at a crisis point.

“This decision is not only because of this decision, but also because of other events this season, like Wolves against Manchester United. I don’t want to pile on the officials or [PGMOL boss] Howard Webb, they must feel terrible. no. conspiratorial theories – nobody gains anything from that .We all made mistakes. But it’s a terrible mistake, unprecedented, you can’t quite believe the explanation given.”

Liverpool released a statement on Sunday night expressing their dismay at the incident, although PGMOL admitted there was a “significant human error” on the full-time hour. “We fully accept the pressures under which the referees in question work, but the existence and implementation of VAR is intended to alleviate that pressure, not exacerbate it,” they said.

“This is essential for the credibility of future decision-making as it concerns all clubs whose expertise will be used to improve processes to ensure this does not happen again. In the meantime we are exploring various options due to the clear need to move forward and decide. .”
