Liverpool could pressure the Premier League to repeat their controversial defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, a sports lawyer claimed after the Reds’ 2-1 defeat.

When VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook mistakenly disallowed a Luis Diaz own goal during a Premier League game, PGMOL admitted the mistake was caused by “significant human error” and later released the audio of the conversation to the public.

After PGMOL’s first post-match statement, Liverpool claimed the decision was “invalid” and promised to “explore options” to seek justice for the offence. The first step was to listen to VAR’s conversation with the referee. Simon Hooper. Sports lawyer Stephen Taylor Heath, co-head of law firm JMW Solicitors, told Mail Sport that the Premier League board could have the power to call a league game if recommended by a select committee, but one key part of the law could be . collided in the Liverpool black case.

Referring to the W1 Premier League rules, Heath said the board could ask for more information about possible violations of the rules, including those committed by officials. As PGMOL explained and highlighted in published audio, video assistant England and his assistant Cook initially thought the on-field decision was a Liverpool goal – and did not overturn the offside when replays clearly showed Diaz. . The VAR operator can be heard saying after the botched kick-off: “Wait-wait-wait-wait, the decision was ‘on the pitch’, are you happy? That’s wrong, Daz, England are moaning and cursing. , shouting’ Oh shit.’

The game was stopped around 30 seconds later when Liverpool were awarded a free-kick, but the panicked VAR team decided not to correct the error and restarted the game, saying: “They restarted the game. Nothing can be done. Nothing can be done.”

Speaking to Mail Sport, Heath said: “If PGMOL think the original mistake was that they thought there was a goal, that is quite worrying because the graphic shows what they were asked to check.

“It is possible that Liverpool will force the Premier League board to convene a committee which would have a replay among other possible outcomes.

– It can be argued that if the referee had noticed the mistake immediately and informed the players and staff about it, the Tottenham manager could certainly have beaten Liverpool.

“It’s been done before when Marcelo Bielsa told Leeds United to win against Aston Villa when his team found their opponent injured.”

However, Liverpool are unlikely to win their case on these grounds as there was no actual breach of the rules – just a miscommunication. Heath also noted that it could be difficult for Liverpool to identify a mistake that legitimately costs the Anfield club points because there are so many other factors that can determine the outcome of a game.
