Caoimhin Kelleher will miss Liverpool’s Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise tonight after picking up a knee injury.

Kelleher, who was due to start against the Belgian league leaders at Anfield, will be sidelined for several weeks after needing 12 stitches in surgery following a collision in training.

The goalkeeper was also left out of Ireland’s squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Greece and Gibraltar this month.

Kelleher played in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at LASK in the group opener two weeks ago and also played in the 3-1 League Cup win at home to Leicester City last Wednesday.

With Adrian out of the Reds’ Europa League squad, Alisson Becker is set to start against the Union tonight. Other options are the young trio of Viteszslav Jaros, Marcelo Pitaluga and Fabian Mrozek, at least one of whom is now in the matchday squad.

“Caoimhin has 12 stitches in his knee,” Ireland manager Stephen Kenny said as he announced his country’s final squad on Thursday afternoon.

“Sometimes with stitches, if it’s a calf, thigh or facial injury, it can go away, but not if it’s in a joint. It just reopens. It’s just a shame for him. He played in the Europa League and would have played three weeks in a row if he had played tonight (at Liverpool).
