Michael Owen spok‍e about Darwin Nunez after the forward kept Union Saint-Gilloise winless in the Europa League. at Anfield

Michael Owen says Darwin Nunez’s qualities are “on the scales” after he earned the Liverpool forward’s strong save in the 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Uruguayan controlled a back ball ruled out for offside before squandering a golden chance from six yards after being tackled by Harvey Elliott and Mohamed Salah.

Nunez has shown quality throughout his Liverpool career, particularly this season, but the 24-year-old still has a long way to go before he is ready following his potential club-record move from Benfica last summer.

The striker’s sister proved costly for Liverpool when Ryan Gravenberch fouled Anthony Moris in the Union goal late in the first half. Diogo Jota then took the win with professionalism on the dead heat.

Owen highlighted Nunez’s finishing ability, but emphasized that with more work on the training ground, the frustrating aspects of his game will disappear.

“It’s a brilliant move and it’s Liverpool at its best – it seems so simple,” the former Reds hero told TNT Sports. “He (Nunez) is one of those players, I’ve watched him closely since he’s been at the club. He’s a great volleyball player, he does certain things when you say, wow, you can’t teach that.” “But then he does some basic things and I’m always hesitant because I argue with people all the time in the local pub and stuff when they say he’s not that good.

“I say, ‘He has qualities that don’t extend,’ simple things like that with a small coach… Either way, it’s frustrating.”
