Liverpool is among those interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, the player’s agent has confirmed.

The 21-year-old Hincapie has established himself as one of the best young defenders around the world and has long been followed by Europe’s elite. Tottenham Hotspur were said to be exploring a deal for the Ecuador international earlier this year.

Liverpool are keen to find a new centre-back and made a bid for Hincapie in the summer, but decided to focus on building a midfield instead.

However, Hincapie’s agent has confirmed that interest remains and Liverpool are considering a move in January.

“Liverpool were interested in him, but [in the summer] they decided to invest in midfield,” agent Manuel Sierra told Futbol sin Cassette. “In January, they talk like other clubs, it will not be less than 50 million euros.”

90min understands that Leverkusen, who are currently top of the Bundesliga, are reluctant to do business with Hincapie, despite remaining in contention for the title, having previously paid the price for the 21-year-old’s move.

Leverkusen’s form has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe, with centre-back Edmond Tapsoba also causing plenty of excitement among scouts.

Tottenham were also interested in Tapsoba in the summer, but ended up signing Dutchman Micky van de Ven.

As well as the Leverkusen duo, Tottenham and Liverpool could be in the market for another defender, with Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly also attracting interest from the Premier League giants.
