Alexis MacAllister insists he is not taking the easy way out as he adapts to his new role as a defensive midfielder at Liverpool.

The Argentine midfielder came under fire for an inconsistent performance at former club Brighton at the weekend when his defensive howler gave the Seagulls the opener. And Mac Allister also appeared to be under significant pressure from his former team-mates in midfield as the home side continually set traps to draw the 24-year-old out of the defensive position he was expected to occupy.

Although he never played as a No.6 before arriving at Anfield and admits it is not his position, the World Cup winner is in no mood to give up trying for boss Jurgen Klopp.

“I love it, love it,” he said of the defensive midfielder. “I’ve said that many times, it’s easy for me to say, ‘No, it’s not my position and I’ll do my best.’ But it’s not like that. Jürgen is there playing me, he supports me and I’m trying to do my best.

“I think I’ve improved a lot defensively in the last two years and I think it’s a job I can do very well. I feel good and I feel my teammates and the coaching staff support me. That’s important .”

Mac Allister admitted he was to blame for Brighton’s opener but improved his positions after a difficult first half and believes that is typical of the character Liverpool have shown this season. TAKE TINS! Should Alexis Mac Allister continue to play in defensive midfield? Comment below.

The Reds regained the lead at half-time and despite a second goal to equalise, they are just three points clear at the top of the Premier League and one behind champions Manchester City.

The Argentine is confident that his team can maintain their position. “We are Liverpool and we know we have to be there,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “I think the start of the season was good, but at the same time we know we can improve and we can grow a little bit more. That’s what we’re trying to do.

“Now we have an international break and then we’ll be back. We’ll keep working and try to win football games. That’s what we want.”
