Gary Lineker backed Liverpool in the title race as he spoke to Micah Richards and Alan Shearer

Gary Lineker believes Liverpool have the experience to challenge for the Premier League title this campaign.

After eight games, entering another two-week international break is now a good point to reflect on the results so far. Liverpool are fourth, three points behind first-placed Tottenham and second-placed Arsenal. The touching distance behind them extends to seventh, West Ham United are three points behind.

It is still very tight and too early to call the peak, but as always in football, the speculation never stops. Many questions have already been asked about Liverpool and the rights of their title contender.

To paraphrase that old Jurgen Klopp phrase again, Lineker has no doubts – he’s a believer when it comes to the Reds.

After discussing the early season contenders on The Rest is Football Podcast on Monday, Micah Richards opened up about his doubts about the Spurs’ potential title race.

“I don’t think so. It’s just because when they get a big injury you have to change the way they play and they don’t have the quality to come in. At Manchester City or even Arsenal they have more experience now. It takes at this stage of the season…”

“And probably Liverpool too. They’re right there,” interrupted Lineker. “I know they didn’t quite win today, but they have good players. They seem to have bought well.”

The third and final member of the podcast, Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, was less convinced after watching Liverpool this season.

He added: “[I’m] not sure about their defense though. I’m not going to change my mind. I think it’s going to be a two-horse race between Arsenal and Manchester City. I think they can stay there for a while, but at the end of the season there will be two.”

Doubts about Liverpool arise last season, when they fell from second last year to a comfortable fifth, outside the Champions League places.

After the summer transfer window, many of the older, more experienced Champions League winners left the club’s midfield to complement the youngsters.
