Jamie Carragher has insisted Liverpool must add to their squad to regain the Premier League title.

After a disappointing 2022/23 season that saw the Reds miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time since 2016, Jurgen Klopp led a midfield overhaul that included Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. and the departure of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool have started the new campaign strongly, winning five out of eight, while their only defeat so far in 2023/24 has come in very difficult circumstances at Tottenham.

The Reds sit in third place, just three points behind leaders Tottenham, going into the international break. However, speaking after the 2-2 draw with Brighton, Carragher suggested that next season could be when his old side can once again become realistic title contenders. He argued that recruitment was still needed in key areas. “I think it will be difficult, if they can go on and win the biggest trophy, which is the Premier League – it will be difficult,” the former defender told Sky Sports.

“I think it could be something, Liverpool could go into next season with a few additions.

“I think Liverpool are missing a top midfielder and maybe another defender. Those gaps will be filled, either in January or in the summer. I think they will be better equipped to go into the Premier League next season.”

Despite the arrival of four new midfielders this summer, Liverpool’s top six options – or lack of them – have been much debated. After selling more defensive midfield options in Henderson and Fabinho, the Reds tried unsuccessfully to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, both of whom eventually joined rivals Chelsea.

Liverpool signed Endo, 30, for around £16m in what many saw as a left-wing move, although the Japan captain has been used sparingly so far, with Mac Allister often favored as a deeper-lying midfielder. result

The club are said to be still looking for a long-term solution for the position, while Anfield Watch understands Fluminense’s Andre Trindade is hoping to move to Anfield after rejecting a summer move.

Anfield Watch also understands that strengthening the defense is a priority in 2024, with the likes of Piero Hincapie (Bayer Leverkusen) and Yukinari Suguwara (AZ) being considered.

Commenting on Liverpool’s start more generally, Carragher added: “It’s been a promising start to the season. And it seems that in the first few weeks, the team he is building will hopefully be able to continue what his previous teams have done.
