Liverpool will have to wait anxiously to see how serious Andy Robertson’s shoulder injury is

Andy Robertson will return to Liverpool with a shoulder injury, Scotland manager Steve Clarke has revealed.

The Reds defender and captain of the Tartan Army had to wear the strap during the first half of Thursday’s 2-0 loss against Spain.

Robertson was on the receiving end of a challenge that saw Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon clumsily tackle the defender. Clarke was tight-lipped about the nature of the defender’s shoulder injury, but admitted he hopes the Scotland skipper can make a speedy return for club and country with European Championship qualification in mind.

The injury raises concerns over Robertson’s fitness for Liverpool’s Merseyside derby clash with Everton on Saturday 21 October. The 29-year-old will not continue with the squad as their preparations turn to Tuesday’s friendly against France. Clarke has confirmed he will return to Liverpool for further trials.

“Obviously he hurt his shoulder. We’ll see and he’s back at his club,” he said.

“It always seems to happen when you lose a player in that position, so we lose Kieran (Tierney) on the left and Andy has a shoulder injury. “We will see how the situation is, we will see how the situation settles down and hopefully he will be good for his club as soon as possible and ready to help us in November.”

Jürgen Klopp is eagerly awaiting the diagnosis of his left side as first choice. However, the German also pays attention to the participation of Kostas Tsimikas in the two qualifiers of the European Championship of Greece against Ireland and the Netherlands.

The Liverpool boss only recently welcomed Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the squad after missing four games for the Reds and one for England with a hamstring injury.

Youngster Luke Chambers made his debut for the club as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Leicester City. He currently plays for England’s Euroelite League team, formerly known as Under-20s.
