An important hint of Ben Doak’s plan was dropped when the meeting with Kylian Mbappe went dark

Scotland international Gemmill has been dancing around Ben Doak’s potential Scotland senior call-up this month following the Liverpool gift’s final appearance.

Scotland Under-21 coach Scot Gemmill has refused to rule out a senior call-up for Liverpool youngster Ben Doak for next week’s friendly with France.

Although the coach admitted the decision was not his to make, despite being impressed with the 17-year-old’s latest performance on international duty.

The Liverpool winger won and converted the penalty to help his under-21s to a 3-1 victory over their Hungarian counterparts at Motherwell’s Fir Park on Friday.

Now, having won three points from a possible six so far in the EC qualifying series, Malta are unbeatable in front of the young Scots. Perhaps Gemmill believes the task can be accomplished without the help of Doak, who he advised to wait for a senior call before Steve Clarke’s men’s trip to France. “It’s Steve’s decision but we talk about it all the time and he knows he can take a player away from me at any time,” Gemmill said after the final whistle, via the Scot. “He and his staff will decide when that time will be.

“Everyone is excited to see Ben and we all agree that his potential is huge and he will do well.

“We all have a huge responsibility to help him realize that potential. It’s great to see such a young player who can inspire the fans – but he wasn’t the only one tonight.”

Also in the headlines and references was Fulham’s Kieron Bowie, who scored twice in the opening seven minutes to send the under-21s on course against Hungary.

But back to Doak, if Clarke decides to give the Liverpool man a chance for Tuesday’s friendly, it will mean one red and one red away after Andy Robertson was sent home for assessment on the shoulder injury he picked up on Thursday. If managers make the right decisions, it would also lead to a meeting between Doak and his Anfield team-mate Ibrahima Konate at Lille’s Stade Pierre Mauroy.
