49ers insider Matt Maiocco is confident the Niners won’t call their FA on Robbie Gould in the near future because Jake Moody is their killer in the near future.

On Sunday, the 49ers fan base got a taste of what the boosts of almost every other NFL team have already experienced this season.

The 49ers simply couldn’t be beaten. They were beaten by an inferior team.

And it looked like they were going to lose 19-17 to the Cleveland Browns. Really, that’s just life in the NFL.

The 49ers are still a good team. There is no question about that.

But they are far from a perfect team, as evidenced by their now-imperfect win-loss record.

We’ll try to figure that part out with this edition of the 49ers

Overreacting? Yes

We need to get Robbie Gould back! (Bill H.)

Yes, overreaction

It’s too early to tell with Jake Moody.

But after being perfect in scoring and extra points in the first five games of the 49ers, his two absences proved costly in Sunday’s loss against the Cleveland Browns.

Robbie Gould, 40, is still without a team. He’s still kicking somewhere. This possibility has not yet materialized. At this point, it’s hard to predict if he’ll find his way back to the NFL with a rival team.

And it’s doubtful that will happen with the 49ers. . . unless there are at least a few days like Sunday. The 49ers felt the time was right to part ways with Gould this offseason.

The 49ers selected the graded kicker in the 2023 rookie class. Grumpy was their friend all the time.

With the young kicker, the 49ers believe they have a guy who increases field goal range, returns more punts, has fewer players and has the ability to be a long-term kicker.

They also knew it could be a day or two like they experienced Sunday in Cleveland. Too much Dallas party, not enough Cleveland business.(Rich S.)

Overreacting? No.

The 49ers have a very professional locker room.

They managed to find the offense in a 42-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in what Fred Warner described as a very fair film-stopping session after that dominant performance.

But I don’t think it’s unfair to accuse the 49ers of spending too much time basking in the glory of this win. There’s no question the 49ers took the Browns’ preparation seriously, but it didn’t seem to be as focused and intense as it was in Dallas week. And it can also relate to the noise outside the building.

Fans and media took longer than usual to praise the 49ers for their Week 5 win over the Cowboys. Dallas was probably asked more than Cleveland last week.

Will this affect the 49ers performance on Sunday? Probably not. But hey, perception has a way of becoming reality.

The 49ers can’t win without CMC on the field. (art F.)

Overreacting? Yes. The 49ers were a very good team before Christian McCaffrey arrived a year ago.

He definitely made them an even better team.

McCaffrey has scored a touchdown in 15 straight games. Many – if not all – of those touchdowns would have been scored by someone else had McCaffrey not been with the team.

On Sunday, the 49ers could easily – and should have – easily beaten the Browns. And if Moody’s punt had gone a few yards, the 49ers would have beaten Cleveland without McCaffrey playing the entire fourth quarter.

Shanahan should have made one more play at the end to get us a little closer to the FG. We had 1 overtime. (Tay P.)

Overreacting? Yes.T

he 49ers were already on the field for a direct and easy kick.

On the subject of the above statement, if McCaffrey had been available, coach Kyle Shanahan might have decided to give the ball to McCaffrey to pick up a few extra yards.

However, I believe Shanahan didn’t want to risk the Cleveland defense by taking the ball away from Jordan Mason and prevent the 49ers from even setting up for a game-winning touchdown. He didn’t say that part.

Shanahan said he wanted to punt on third down to allow enough time and downtime for the unlikely scenario of a botched kick. I have no problem with how this series went. Is a 38-yard attempt (with a punt threat) much better than a 41-yard attempt?

At the time, it appeared the bigger mistake was the offensive line handling when the 49ers took over and led by one point with 3:21 left.

The 49ers played three passes. They only finished one of those, and Brandon Aiyuk was forced out of bounds on first down. Three and out, the Browns didn’t call a timeout, and Cleveland got the ball back with 2:56 left in the game.

Shanahan explained that his goal was not to play three straight passing games. The first down prevented Purdy from hitting Aiyuki against Cleveland’s punt.

When Purdy was called for an intentional landing, it put the 49ers in a position where they had to throw to get some yards and have a chance for a touchdown on third down. Shanahan said he was more focused on first downs than running the clock at that point in the game. In hindsight, with the 49ers running out of time, it gave them enough time to move into the end zone in the final seconds.

Our defense is not as good as we thought. (Jalene RM)
Overreacting? No.

The 49ers defense is very good. It is one of the best in the league. But you’re right, the media and fan consensus probably gave the team’s defense a little more credit than it deserves.

Adding Randy Gregory seems like a good move for the 49ers. He’s already the team’s second-best passer. He saw more snaps than Drake Jackson in his 49ers debut.

This should strengthen the biggest weakness of the defense force. Now the 49ers need to make sure they aren’t more inclined to play on the edge like they were on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Browns looked stronger defensively, despite a 49ers offense that has put up 30-plus points every week.
Brock showed he HAS what it takes. He was ultimately clutch. (Michael G.)
Overreacting? Yes.

We get your point: Regardless of how Brock Purdy’s stat line looked coming into this game, he did enough to pressure the 49ers into a game-winning touchdown.

Respecting the game, the 49ers missed some opportunities for big plays earlier in the game. Aiyuk could have had some big catches. And Purdy could have been more accurate on several throws, including one to McCaffrey. In addition, many mistakes were made when players were not in their designated positions, making it difficult for Purdy to succeed.
The bottom line is this: Everything you thought about Purdy before this game should be the same about him today.
He had a bad game. Every quarterback has these types of plays.
In the end, he contributed to lead the 49ers to the winning points. This time it just didn’t work.
