Historically, the Dallas Cowboys have been relatively quiet when it comes to major offseason trades. Will that change this year as the NFL’s annual trade deadline approaches on Oct. 31?

With the team enjoying a Week 7 bye, the Cowboys front office is busy evaluating ways to improve the team in the second half of the season.

Where do they start? There’s always room for improvement on any team, but our own Mike Fisher at CowboysSI.com has already discussed that some of the more obvious position groups could include wide receiver, linebacker and cornerback.

A season-ending injury to cornerback Trevon Diggs has left Dallas’ center suddenly stretched thin. Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch’s recent injury placed him on injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least the next four weeks with neck issues.

Team owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said the organization is “happy” with the current team, but history tells us that doesn’t mean there aren’t the right pieces to add.

Jones and the Cowboys technically didn’t make a move at the deadline last season, but were aggressive last week and traded for defensive end Johnathan Hankins. NFL insider Jordan Schultz believes Dallas could be in the market to add depth to the secondary this year.

“Dallas could definitely be in the market for a cornerback. Yes, DaRon Bland has played very well, but they still want more depth at cornerback. They lost Trevon Diggs for the season with an ACL. Who else are they going to get? Maybe it’s a slot man, a veteran corner…someone who can come in and contribute to the defense. … In what position could they develop themselves? That would be the corner.”

Dallas was active in the offseason, bringing in corner Stephon Gilmore and quarterback Brandin Cooks, both of whom helped beat the Chargers on Monday night. In addition to sending their 2024 fourth-round pick to Kansas City when they traded for Eric Scott Jr. in the NFL Draft in April, Dallas has plenty of draft capital to spend before October 31st.
