Liverpool supporters defied tradition to boo Jordan Pickford during Merseyside derby

  Mohamed Salah scored two late goals to help Liverpool beat city rivals Everton 2-0 after Ashley Young was sent off for two first-half fouls. 

 Liverpool finally found the breakthrough goal in the 74th minute when Salah slotted the ball home and the Egyptian doubled their lead on the break. 

 Elsewhere, Liverpool fans broke with tradition before the second half, praising Pickford on his way to goal.  

 Indeed, Anfield is known for applauding opposition goalkeepers as they run towards the Kop. It’s a long-standing tradition, pioneered by Aaron Ramsdale and Iker Casillas, dating back to Bill Shankly’s time as Liverpool manager in the 60s. 

 Statistician Dave Ball recalled on This is Anfield in 2020: “I always remember the game after England won the World Cup in 1966, Liverpool played Everton in the Charity Shield and then the first game here (at Anfield) was against Leicester in the league. City. 

 “Gordon Banks was in goal for Leicester and I think Shankly sent him off early to get a kick out of the Kop and everything. But when he came on against Liverpool, the Kop went absolutely ballistic. It was the first time I’d ever scored. that. I saw the Kop react like that. “Some people say it was in the 50s and 60s but I’ve spoken to people and they don’t really remember, but I definitely remember it was the case of Gordon Banks. He was a great person on Merseyside , the Kopites loved him.” 

 But Pickford, the current England number one, did not receive the same hero’s welcome as his Three Lions predecessor Gordan Banks. 

 It is easy to explain. Pickford himself did not applaud Kopi. 

 Therefore, the crowd’s applause turned to laughter when Pickford did not return their respect. In fact, it probably comes as no surprise given the Everton marksman’s checkered past with local rivals.
