Among the roster changes made by the Dallas Cowboys was the addition of Eric Saubert, a former tight end for the Denver Broncos. There were four unfilled roster spots on the Cowboys practice squad going into Week 8, as the team released linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive tackle Alex Taylor-Prioleau.

DallasCowboys.com’s Nick Harris wrote on X on October 24, 2023, “TRANSACTIONS: The DallasCowboys have signed TE Eric Saubert (Drake, 2017 5th round pick), LB Buddy Johnson (Texas A&M, 2021 4th round pick), G Chris Glaser (Virginia, 2022 UDFA), and G Adam Pankey (West Virginia, 2017 UDFA) to the practice squad.” “Every single P-Squad spot was taken. Dallas now has a full roster, so if they sign more veterans, they would have to release a player.

In the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Saubert was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons following his exceptional career at Drake. Saubert has also played briefly for the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Denver Broncos in addition to Atlanta. Although Saubert signed an offseason contract with the Dolphins, Miami dismissed the tight end on September 6th due to an injury designation.

Linebacker Buddy Johnson Was Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 4th Round of the 2021 NFL Draft

Johnson attended Texas A&M and was born in Dallas, so the relocation was somewhat of a homecoming for him. He was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2021 draft with the 140th overall pick. Before being cut by Pittsburgh in August 2022, Johnson participated in four games for the team in 2021.

In the 2022 season, he went on to have brief spells with the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers. Johnson most recently signed an offseason deal with the Bears, but an injury in August forced him to be waived.

Cowboys Tight End Eric Saubert Started 6 Games for the Denver Broncos in 2022

According to the most recent Cowboys rumors, linebacker and tight end are both commonly mentioned as possible trade targets. After playing in all 17 games, including six starts, Saubert is coming off of his greatest NFL season with Denver, when he recorded 15 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown in 2022.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compared Saubert to Jace Amaro prior to the 2017 draft, lauding his “eye-popping potential..

As it oscillates between eye-popping potential and attention and effort breakdowns as a roadblock, tape study is extremely frustrating for Saubert, Zierlein noted in the tight end’s pre-draft assessment. “Saubert should test well at the combine because of his speed and athleticism, which will get him open.” Teams will need to weigh the flashes against the drops and determine when to commit to a tight end who has a low floor but starting potential.
