The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with a number of injuries in recent weeks, and they just announced another. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been placed in the concussion protocol and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s Week 9 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 49ers will likely be without Purdy because no player has entered the concussion protocol and played in the same week this year. That means Sam Darnold will likely make his season debut in this game.

Brock Purdy started showing signs of struggling in recent weeks, but was still good, going 131-of-193 (67.9 completion percentage) for 1,668 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. What should we expect from the San Francisco 49ers without Brock Purdy?

The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a lot of injuries as they are already without wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who is out for the next few weeks. Brock Purdy’s absence on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals could be a boon for the offense.

Kyle Shanahan has shown the ability to dominate without much for the quarterback. See how he used Jimmy Garoppolo in the playoffs to get them to the Super Bowl a few years ago. Shanahan can mask the issues, but Brock Purdy has struggled in recent games. Heading into his last two games, he has two touchdown passes to three interceptions and is averaging just under 200 yards per game.

There is still plenty of talent on this 49ers roster, including quarterback Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle. This offense is dominant as they average 28.7 points per game and you could argue that Purdy is their weakest link in this football.

They face decent but not great defenses from the Cincinnati Bengals, the bye week, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I doubt Purdy will be fine after the bye week, but that’s still to be expected, a blessing in disguise.

If San Francisco lets Purdy sit down and own up to his mistakes, it could help him in the long run and turn this 49ers team back into a dominant team early in the year.
