Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey has been powerful and reliable since joining the San Francisco 49ers by trade last season. He’s been so consistently excellent, in fact, that this week he is poised to tie an NFL record.

Christian McCaffrey, the running back for the 49ers, has found the end zone in 17 straight games if he scores a touchdown during this week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Even in the absence of any context, this is an unquestionably astounding statistic, but it would also be a historic first.

As noted by Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, this would equal an NFL record that has been in place for almost sixty years.

“As of right now, Lenny Moore of the Baltimore Colts holds the record. From October 27, 1963, to December 13, 1964, Moore scored a touchdown in every game. (These records include postseason games; McCaffrey scored touchdowns in all three of the 49ers’ playoff games last season, while Moore’s streak stopped when he failed to score a touchdown in the Colts’ 1964 playoff loss.) Smith penned an article for Pro Football Talk last week.

The NFL community expressed a great deal of opinion on social media about the rather absurd news that McCaffrey is getting close to this record.
