When confronted with the next low in his brief NFL career, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy resorted to his faith.

“Who I am and what I stand for, that doesn’t change,” Purdy told reporters on Sunday, October 29, following the team’s 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Everyone can say what they want, but I know who I am as a person, and my faith, my relationship with God is the most important, and I’m going to continue to rely on that,” Purdy said. “It’s brought me this far in my life, and I’ll always be with God and stand firm with God.” So I know he’ll look after me no matter what.”

Purdy has already discussed his faith, but this time it came during a three-game losing slump after his electrifying 10-0 career start. He was held accountable for the latest defeat, which included two interceptions and a strip sack fumble that thwarted a potential comeback.

“Man, I should have handed it off,” Purdy said of his first third-quarter interception. “It’s as simple as that.” It was an option play, with George [Kittle] going around the backside to chuck the ball to him.”

“It wasn’t there when I pulled it to toss it to him.” So I made something up and just scrambled to the right. At that moment, I have to know that the linemen are downfield, and all I have to do is try to get what I can. But throwing the ball would be a punishment, and I need to improve,” Purdy continued. “So I saw Elijah in the corner of the end zone, tried making something happen there, but regardless, it would have been a penalty, so that’s on me.”

‘It’s Just Finishing Drives,’ says Brock Purdy.

Purdy acknowledged a slew of difficulties as the 49ers prepare for their bye week. In Week 10, San Francisco will meet the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are on a five-game winning run.

“It’s just finishing drives,” said Purdy. “We’ll get the ball moving and we’ll start rolling and get first downs and then, you know, there’s just some third downs that we got to convert better at, especially down in the red zone.”

“There’s points to be put up for us and whether that’s a field goal or obviously converting a third down and continuing the drive to score, it’s as simple as we’re just handcuffing ourselves,” he said.

Brock Purdy: ‘We Have a Bad Taste in Our Mouth’

Purdy excelled in his first five games of the season, as the 49ers scored 30 or more points each time. National acclaim has also poured in for the former Mr. Irrelevant, who was the final choice in the 2022 NFL Draft.

During his three-week slump, he has five interceptions and only 17 points per game. Purdy has had three chances to rouse his squad, and with the exception of a missed field goal, he has failed each time.

“Now we have to wait 14 days to play our next game for our next shot or next opportunity and it hurts,” Purdy told the media. “We have a bad taste in our mouth.”
