The Carolina Panthers were allegedly hearing calls from many clubs interested in acquiring standout pass rusher Brian Burns in the days leading up to Tuesday’s trade deadline.According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers were among at least five clubs interested in Burns’ availability.

Burns eventually stayed with the Panthers, while the 49ers signed former Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young. However, it should come as no surprise that Burns was on the 49ers’ radar.

“We were in a lot of discussions,” general manager John Lynch told reporters earlier this week.

It’s unclear how far the talks between the 49ers and Panthers progressed. According to Schefter, despite receiving interest from other teams, the Panthers quickly rejected all queries, implying that conversations did not go very far.

“But the Panthers shut down those teams just as quickly as they inquired and had no intention of trading the coveted Burns, according to sources,” Schefter wrote in his report. “Last season, the Los Angeles Rams offered two first-round draft picks to the Panthers for Burns, but Carolina opted to hold on to him.”

Lynch admitted to spending a sleepless night before the trade deadline, uncertain that any transaction would be completed. The 49ers, on the other hand, were able to clinch their deal for Young just hours before the trade deadline.
