According to Dallas Cowboys reports, the organization may part ways with Brandin Cooks.

The Dallas Cowboys must decide what to do with wide receiver Brandin Cooks, whom they acquired in a trade this offseason but has yet to see consistent playing time.

Cooks has only 17 receptions for 165 yards and two scores for Dallas through Week 9.According to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, if Cooks’ situation does not improve this offseason, the Cowboys may decide to release him.

“Cooks was supposed to improve the Dallas offense in two spots,” Schatz wrote in an October 27, 2023, article about “who is not working with their new teams.” “He was going to give the Cowboys a strong, consistent No. 2 wide receiver to help take attention away from CeeDee Lamb, which would push Michael Gallup down to No. 3 to improve that position as well.” That has not been the case. Dallas’ attack is ranked 19th in pass DVOA this season [as of Week 8], and Cooks has been a contributor.

“His low total of 23 targets demonstrates the difficulty he’s having getting open.” In ESPN’s Receiver Tracking Metrics, Cooks ranks 72nd out of 81 qualifying receivers. His open score of 40 places him in the 70th percentile. Cooks performs slightly better in DVOA, which measures value per target, but he still ranks 56th. Lamb is ranked 12th since he is not a part of the problem.

“If things don’t improve this season, the Cowboys can let Cooks go.” Designating him as a post-June 1 cut would cost them $2 million in dead money over the following three years but save them $8 million in cap space in 2024.”
